Popion offers a network of accessible battery-exchange stations that refuel electric vehicles within a few minutes. A modular battery-pack design is used to allow seamless battery exchange for a variety of vehicles. In order to get a refuel, a vehicle stops at a designated battery-exchange station. The station operator uses exchange equipment to take out the depleted batteries from the vehicle and put fully charged batteries back in. The exchange sequence is expected to put the vehicle back into operation within only 5-10 minutes after the stop, thus significantly reducing the time required to obtain a full-battery charge. The depleted batteries are mounted onto the charging rack to get charged and ready for the next use.
The battery exchange station infrastructure is up to 4 times less expensive to build compared to plug-in charging infrastructure. It requires less Direct Current Fast Charging (DCFC) equipment than plug-in charging since one charger can fuel up to 15 vehicles in a day.
